Fusion Mineral Paint has a built in top coat which dries to a gorgeous matte finish! FUSION is made up of 100% acrylic resin and is unlike any other product on the market. This results in one consistent and cohesive surface across your piece which is a water proof, non-porous surface. This is why you do not need a top coat for water-permanency! Fusion dries to the touch in less than an hour, and cures to a very durable finish in 21 days.
I love this! This means that most pieces don’t have to have anything extra done to them. Just prep, then paint, then enjoy!
But… what if you are painting something to stick outside in your yard? What if the piece you’ve just painted will be sat on (or more truthfully, wiggled on) by a bunch of squirmy kids? What if the table you’ve just beautified will be coloured on by budding artists who just happen to miss the colouring page?
That’s where Tough Coat comes in!
Tough Coat Clear
Tough Coat uses only 100% acrylic and is perfect as a top coat sealer for those high traffic
surfaces such as table tops, seating, doors and floors. It dries to a satin finish. Fusion™
Tough Coat differs from our competition with its use of pure acrylic, unlike other products on the market that use lesser acrylic resins which yellow and embrittle over time, making the finish less durable.
Tough Coat Clear is a true non yellowing clear coat. It can be applied with a brush or rag onto recently painted or clean, non-oily surfaces. Homestead House has an informative blog post all about Tough Coat here.
I’m painting a sign to put out by the road. I started with a pallet and some wood salvaged from an old IKEA bed. Prep work included a bit of sanding and some wood filler, as you can see in the picture above.
The first coat was colour blocker, an ingenious Fusion Product made from recycled Fusion mineral paint. It’s half the cost of the regular paint, and is great for a first coat. Because this sign will be out in the weather (and winter is fast approaching) I wanted to make sure it would withstand anything Nature throws at it.
That was followed by a coat of Stirling, then I drybrushed some Ash on top, to give it a layered and aged look.
We stencilled the letters onto the sign, then added the “Certified Merchant and Mentor Logo”. Repeated with a slight variation to the layout on the other side.
The next step was adding the Tough Coat to give this sign the protection it deserves.
The trick to easy application is to dilute the Tough Coat by 10% with some water. I used 250 ml of Tough Coat and 25 ml of water. To apply, use a rag from an old polyester/cotton T-Shirt. Dampen the rag, then add the diluted TC/H2O combination to the rag. Apply quickly and let it dry, then apply a second coat.
I made a brief video to demonstrate the application, but I have no idea how to upload it here. Visit my Facebook page to see it. (I forgot to say anything. The video shows me applying the TC with only the sound of the rag dragging across the wood. I’ll try to do better next time! 😀 )
So, to recap: I love Fusion Mineral Paint because it has a built-in Top Coat. I love the fact that you can add MORE protection if you so desire, with Tough Coat. Tough Coat NEVER yellows or cracks, and remains clear and gorgeous. It comes in a pre-stained Antique formula if you want to add a bit of antiquing to your piece.
